| | Last week’s return to “the beginning” of our Torah cycle started, of course, with the first word: “Bereshit.” Our sages ask the question of why the Torah starts with the letter “Bet” rather than with the letter “Aleph,” and this week I encountered a very nice interpretation from Bereshit Rabbah: “Rabbi Yonah said in the name of Rabbi Levi: Why was the world created with a "bet"? Just as a bet is closed on all sides and open in the front, so you are not permitted to say, ‘What is beneath? What is above? What came before?’” The shape of the letter Bet has three closed sides and one wide-open side, opening the Torah facing all the letters, words, chapters, and books that follow. While we have just spent many weeks focused on looking back and reflecting, it’s now time to begin again and to point ourselves forward, just like the opening of the letter Bet. This is our chance to stop worrying about what came before, and to open ourselves up to the incredible potential and possibilities of the year ahead. What does this mean for our Camp Yavneh community and staff team? It means we are moving full-steam ahead to Kayitz (Summer) 2023, including: - Our 2023 summer camp enrollment process, with many aydot already close to full!!
- Opening the 2023 Tzevet (staff) application next week, which will formally kick off our process of pulling together the absolute best team of madrichim, rashei aydot, and mumchim (program specialists) for next summer.
- Active work on the itinerary and program for Na’aleh, our Leadership Seminar in Israel.
- Initial planning for some winter and spring Yavneh community events and opportunities.
The day after Simchat Torah, I traveled up to New England for: - Visits with campers and staff members at both Schechter Boston and Gann Academy.
- Our first in-person Yavneh Board meeting (albeit hybrid with some members still “zooming in”) since before the pandemic.
- The annual JCamp180 Conference, organized by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. (Thank you to my amazing teacher Rae Ringel –who also happens to be a proud Yavneh parent – for sharing the Bereshit Rabbah source as a part of her keynote address at the conference!)
In the coming weeks and months I look forward to speaking with many prospective new parents, interviewing new and returning staff applicants, and visiting with many more of our campers in Boston, DC, New York, and Israel. The Camp Yavneh team is wide-open to next summer’s exciting and inspiring potential and possibilities, and we look forward to keeping you updated as we move forward!
