Many of Yavneh's Masorot (traditions) can be seen as sacrosanct. Camps are institutions with strong customs. There is familiarity that brings people back from one summer to the next. In today's society, having rituals that stand the test of time is refreshing. We are so fortunate that at Yavneh we are rich with traditions - some that have been around for 75 years and others that are newer.

Tradition can only be sustained with people who are familiar with them. What better way to ensure that the Yavneh tradition stays vibrant than by bringing back people who embody those values. As we continue to introduce our community to members of our summer Hanhallah, we are quite fortunate to have two vatikim (veterans) coming back to camp this summer to lead our campers. Please welcome back our Rosh Tze'irim (Head of Lower Camp), Steve Shimshak (K'94). Steve, who is an early childhood educator during the year is so well suited for the position of helping our Lower Camp chanichim (campers) navigate their summer home. Steve is fun-loving and kind. He is so excited to get to meet all of the chanichim Tze'irim and work with the staff. Below, you can read a bit more about Steve.

In the next edition,we look forward to introducing you to Alanna Wolf, our Rosh No'ar (Head of Upper Camp).

Shabbat Shalom.

This week's guest voice: Steve Shimshak (K'94)Rosh Tze'irim (head of lower camp)

I am so excited to start with our young family back at camp this summer. My twin six year old daughters, Isabella and Zoe, will have the opportunity to experience the magic of what brought me and my wife Becca together at Yavneh all those years ago. To say we are excited would be an understatement. We are absolutely thrilled to get back to the grounds where we first met, the happiest place on Earth...

Q: Has camp used the off-season and lead-time to think about the health facilities at camp?

In addition to ensuring we have all the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) necessary to keep our MARP (Health Center) staff healthy, we have taken this year to re-envision and update our beloved MARP

Camp families and parents, please be on the lookout for our COVID-19 playbook communication next week. The playbook will also be available and updated throughout the spring on our website

Alumni Spotlight פינת בוגרים

Rob Finkelstein (K'89) and Cinnamon Shtick

Seventeen years into practicing law and four years after opening his own law firm, Rob Finkelstein (K’89) decided to pursue a long-time dream and enrolled in culinary school for pastry arts. After graduating the nine-month program of five-hour classes three nights per week, Rob recently started a recipe blog, Cinnamon Shtick, to share recipes and baking techniques. The name Cinnamon Shtick is a culmination of Rob’s obsession with cinnamon and love for Jewish inspired treats. When Rob wanted a creative, fun logo for his blog, he naturally turned to Yavneh alum Ed Shems (K’85)...

SAVE THE DATE!

Join Rob from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2021 for a live Zoom baking event! Rob will demonstrate one of the recipes from his recently launched blog, Cinnamon Shtick, and impart some baking tips. The recipe will be shared beforehand so anyone who wishes to bake along can make sure to have the necessary ingredients. This event is open to all Yavneh alumni and their children 13 years or older. Be sure to mark your calendars for a fun hour of baking and shmoozing!
