Dear Yavneh Family,

With camp set to welcome your children in just a few days, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to those who have helped get us here. We are eagerly anticipating a wonderful summer at Machaneh Yavneh!

Yavneh’s leadership team, led by our incredible new director Jane-Rachel Schonbrun, has been hard at work for months getting camp ready to open the gates for Kerem starting Sunday June 26th, followed by campers on June 28th. We want to sincerely thank Bil Zarch, our outgoing director, for helping to ease Jane-Rachel’s transition into her new position. We look forward to more formal recognition at a later date of Bil's many contributions to camp. Jane-Rachel hit the ground running and has been getting to know the ins and outs of camp and can’t wait to start her first summer at Yavneh. Our Board of Directors is impressed with Jane-Rachel’s leadership and we can't wait to support her as she directs Yavneh into the future.

A special thanks goes to the year-round team, our summer staff and our trusted advisors for working tirelessly on behalf of Yavneh to help ensure that all measures and support are given to guide another phenomenal camp summer amidst a global pandemic. As the Covid landscape is ever-changing, we know that a dedicated team is working with Jane-Rachel to ensure the health and wellness of our entire Camp Yavneh community.

Finally, we want to thank you, our camp families, for entrusting us with your children for the summer on Lucas Pond. Yavneh staff is eagerly waiting to welcome your children for Kayitz 2022. This summer promises to be filled with traditions, old and new, engaging activities, ruach, learning and love for Judaism in the Klal Yisrael spirit that makes Camp Yavneh so special.  Wishing you all our best for a Shabbat Shalom and a wonderful summer!

L’hitraot,

Matt Hills

Kol Yavneh:

Emmett Wechsler (K'19), Rosh Arayot '22

Coming back to Camp was the best decision I made this year. Ever since I was asked to be a rosh in April, I have been excitedly waiting for Camp to start.

Last week, we (the roshes) had a retreat to learn what being a Rosh is about. It was a crazy feeling being at Camp with a small amount of people. At first, we didn’t know each other very well but those two days of the Rosh retreat really brought us closer together. Not only did we learn more about each other and how to have good team work, but we also had a fun time just hanging out together. Whether it was cleaning the rosh’s room or just talking about camp drama. It felt nice to finally be back. After our rosh’s retreat, we then headed back to our homes or our friends for a relaxing Shabbos before the summer began.

We return back to camp this past Sunday and got right to work again preparing Camp for staff week. We had some meetings about the schedules and what we have to do but nothing too hard. Finally, the rest of the staff arrived so we could now prepare them for the chanichim (campers). The chadashim (new counselors) and vatikim (veteran counselors) got nicely situated on the first couple of nights. We have been training them to become the best madrichim (counselors) they can be. Through many meetings we all feel that our staff is ready for the summer to begin. We also learned about how to manage our tzevet's (staff) well being and the planning of peulot (activities).

Although we have done a lot of work, we are still excited for the summer to start on this upcoming Tuesday. As we go in to the last Shabbat before camp starts, we reflect on all that we have learned during shavuah hachanah (staff week) and look forward to next Shabbat when the ruach (spirit) of the machaneh (camp) is at its full strength.
